You know that saying, “No better time like the present”?
That phrase has always annoyed me because it seems to come from someone a little too happy, and sounds more like “Listen to me, I know what I am talking about!”
I’m not sure if that one-liner is supposed to deliver a sense of urgency or just piss you off, but it does make you kind of hate yourself for not acting on something sooner.
Well, I don’t want to piss you off or make you hate yourself so I say let’s focus on the urgency part, and the urgency is Content Marketing.
I’ve thrown that topic around a few times and for many of you, we have had hour-long meetings surrounding this subject.
Content Marketing is the process of creating and sharing valuable free content to attract potential buyers or prospects, and turn them into loyal and repeat customers.
Repeat customers? That’s like the Holy Grail for many businesses, but sadly, so many do absolutely nothing in terms of attracting new customers or keeping existing ones.
When Business Is Slow
My last post talked about what many small businesses do when business is slow: They cut all their marketing efforts.
I’m not sure the rationale behind cutting all your marketing but I do understand that some view marketing as a luxury not a necessity.
If you have that view I encourage you to change it quickly!
Business will get slow, that’s inevitable. It’s what you do before business gets slow that will set you apart from those who do nothing.
Beth Hayden recently published a case study on Copyblogger that described how Content Marketing saved a brick and mortar business.
While I won’t rewrite the entire article (go read it now!), I will say that the business Beth talks about is a pool company that felt the hard impact of the recession.
What they did to combat the recession and still get their business out there was to pick up blogging (aka Content Marketing) and begin answering questions and creating content directly on their site for their customers.
Now, their site is one of the biggest pool company sites on the web!
But You Said Before Business Is Slow!
You’re right!
While River Pools has been incredibly successful with their Content Marketing efforts, I would image that they would have loved to have started content marketing even earlier.
And that’s what I want for you!
I want you to realize that this is something that you can begin right now, and help position your company better when times get tough.
You may be an expert in your industry, and you know that, but do others?
By creating content for your customers and potential customers you are establishing yourself as an expert. Someone with authority!
And because you have established this credibility and authority, your company will now be better off than your competitors.
Sure, you can start Content Marketing when business is slow. Maybe that’s the urgency you need, when the pressure is really on.
But why create urgency out of panic? Why not create urgency out of excitement?!
I want you to be excited about creating content that continuously works for you and drives new and repeat business.
